What good is a REALTOR

posted: 07/31/2018

What good is a REALTOR® if she won't tell you how good or bad the schools are or how bad the crime is in an area?

As REALTORS®, we are bound by Federal Fair Housing laws and a strict Code of Ethics that prohibits us from denying equal professional services to any person for the reason of race, color, religion, sex, handicap, familial status, national origin, sexual orientation, or gender identity.

Our Code of Ethics prohibits us from volunteering information regarding the racial, religious or ethnic composition of any neighborhood. We are prohibited from providing information that indicates any preference, limitations or discrimination based on the classes protected under Fair Housing laws. Providing a preference or limitation would include saying "You want to live in this area because…" or "You do not want to live here because…" if those preferences or limitations are based on race, color, religion, sex, handicap familial status, national origin, sexual orientation, or gender identity.

Although we cannot discuss preferences or limitations about schools, crime, and neighborhoods, we can point you to sources where you can research those things. We can provide tremendous assistance in showing you the properties in neighborhoods you want to see based upon your criteria and financial qualification. We can guide you through the entire home buying process by:

  • providing local market statistics
  • helping you negotiate the contract
  • explaining the home inspection process
  • assisting with negotiating repairs
  • navigating the appraisal process
  • coordinating the closing
